How to download .ris file from Endnote?

If you’re preparing to import references from EndNote into EasySLR, you’ll first need to export your library or a selected set of references in RIS format. The RIS file contains standardized citation information that the platform can recognize and import easily.

Follow the steps below to export your EndNote references as a RIS file:

Step 1: Open Your EndNote Library
  1. Launch EndNote Desktop or EndNote Online.
  2. Open the library that contains the references you wish to export.
Step 2: Select References to Export
  1. To export all references, click anywhere in your library list and press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (Mac).
  2. To export specific references, select the references you want.
Step 3: Choose the Export Option
  • Go to the top menu and select:
    File → Export

A file save dialog box will appear.

Step 4: Set the Export Format
  1. In the Save as type dropdown (Windows) or Format dropdown (Mac), choose Text File (.txt).
  2. Name your file (e.g., My_EndNote_References).
  3. Under Output Style, select RefMan (RIS) Export.
    • If you don’t see this option, click Select Another Style… and search for RefMan (RIS) Export.
    • You can also create or edit styles under Edit → Output Styles if needed.

Step 5: Save the File
  • Add “.ris” at the end of the file name when saving.

  • Choose the destination folder and click Save.
  • The exported file will have a .ris.txt extension (e.g., My_EndNote_References.ris.txt).
  • Rename the file to remove the “.txt” extension before uploading on EasySLR.
